smoking
News | Home
Hong Kong - Hong Kong's city-wide anti-smoking drive was facing a serious setback Thursday after three popular bars won a court ruling that may allow them to let smokers back indoors. The bars successfully argued in the High Court that health inspectors were wrong to ban them from allowing smokers inside on the basis that they make most of their money from serving food not drink.
Currently, only bars that make most of their money from drink sales are allowed to admit smokers while those that make most of their money from serving food are not.
At a hearing Wednesday, The Bull and Bear in Wan Chai, Sticky Fingers in Tsim Sha Tsui and Biztro in Central all had the findings of the health inspectors overturned on the basis that they visited at lunchtime only.
Scores more bars which have been forced to evict smokers on the basis that their main business is food may now be able to challenge the health inspectors' findings.
The High Court ordered a new hearing into the status of the three bars and whether they should or should not be allowed to let people smoke inside.
Smoking was banned in all Hong Kong restaurants and bars at the beginning of 2007 but nightclubs and bars making most of their revenue through drink sales were exempted until June 2009.

Vagabond
As I walked down the busy street, knowing I was late for an important meeting, my eye fell upon one of those unfortunate, homeless vagabonds that are found in every city these days.
I saw a person who was wearing what can only be describes as rags, carrying every worldly possession in two plastic bags. My heart was touched by this person's condition.
Some people turned to stare. Others quickly looked away as if the sight would somehow contaminate them.
Recalling some long ago Sunday School admonition to "care for the sick, feed the hungry and clothe the naked," I was moved by some powerful inner urge to reach out to this unfortunate person.
Yes, where some people saw only rags, I saw a hidden beauty. A small voice inside my head called out, "Reach out, reach out!"

So I did..........
I get out of the hospital in about 3 months.
It would be nice to get a card or maybe a visitor.

wanchai bound
I booked our flight to Hk today. We arrive on Xmas Eve.We will stay for a day or two before flying out to the Phillipines. I booked with Oasis airlines, only £500 for the four of us (one way-I'll book the return next month), not sure if we have to sit in the hold though. It works out at about £1000 return. The cheapest quote before that was about £2200 flying out after xmas. We will return to Hk about the 10/11th Jan before flying back to the UK on the 13th.
I feel better able to handle the coming cold knowing that I can get out of it for a bit.
Looking forward to a couple of nights you know where.

drunken terror alert
I can remember shortly after the Bali bombings, which shocked us all at the time,it made a lot of us feel like targets...I can remember a few of us having quite a few drinks in the Old China becoming quite paranoid.
After 2 or 3 dodgy looking blokes of unknown nationality walked into the bar, looked around unsmilingly and then walked back out again, we urged Stew to call the police. Stewart, not being as pissed as us declined.
Having nothing better to do, we called them anyway. The police listened patiently and must have gone away thinking, bloody drunken gweilos!
We never did hear of any terrorist related activity in HK. In retrospect, the guys we saw, probably walked in, and saw us staring at them, and thought this place is full of dodgy looking weirdos(which it was/is) and buggered off out.
I write this as all UK airports are closed due to terror alerts.

fenwicks!! (found on other blog click title to go to full article)
Are the hookers pushing coke at Fenwicks?
LT makes a comment which got me thinking. He says no one has ever tried to push cocaine to him while he has been in Fenwicks and he goes there more often than most.
I have been in Fenwicks (entertaining clients, get over it) a couple of times in the past six weeks, both times when the place was full of Colombians. I was approached several times for the obvious but I was never offered any drugs.
If anyone who reads this has ever experienced being offered coke in Fenwicks can you leave a comment?
The more I think about this the more I reckon that either Barclay Crawford got stiffed with a high bar bill and is making the whole thing up, or someone told him they got coke there but it is more likely they asked for it making the assumption that Colombians would have some.
I just cannot see anyone freely offering cocaine to someone they do not know without any form of referral or introduction to avoid stings which could so easily be set up w.....follow link to continue reading(this is not my blog)
